Leverkusen, Germany in 1963, Schrempf began his basketball career at Centralia High School in Washington State, where he led his team to a state runner-up finish in his senior year. He then went on to play for the University of Washington, where he was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and helped lead the Huskies to a Pac-10 championship in 1984.
